Curro Rivonia school learner India Benham won a Bronze medal at the English Olympiad in Thailand. Her performance helped the South African team win the Top Achiever Group award. Schoolchronicle.com brings to you the insights shared by her mother Olivia Behnam on India’s success.

On how they raised India to perform at the highest level
India has always been encouraged to believe that success comes through hard work, discipline, and consistency. We have raised her in a home where education is valued, goals are pursued with dedication, and effort is celebrated as much as achievement. More importantly, we have taught her that humility, kindness, and resilience are just as important as academic success.

On how you helped daughter pursue the best in life while managing your responsibilities
I (her mother Olivia Behnam) work in the financial services sector for one of South Africa’s leading banks. My role requires managing complexity, understanding abstract concepts, communicating strategy, and leading teams toward a common purpose. Balancing a demanding career and motherhood requires intentional planning and sacrifice, but I believe that children learn more from what they see than what they are told. By demonstrating commitment, discipline, and perseverance in my own life, I hope to inspire India to do the same in hers.

On child’s journey to this achievement
The journey has been built on many small moments rather than one defining event. Her willingness to learn, her commitment to preparing consistently, and her determination to improve after setbacks have all contributed to this achievement. Participating in academic competitions over the years helped build her confidence, while her recent preparation for the International Olympiad in Bangkok reflected the dedication and focus required to perform on a global stage.

On role of parents and school in the lives of learners
Success is truly a partnership between parents, schools, and the child. Schools provide opportunities, mentorship, and a nurturing environment, while parents provide encouragement, guidance, and emotional support. Together they create the foundation that allows children to develop their talents and believe in their potential.

On aspirations of India
India enjoys challenging herself academically while also maintaining a healthy balance through sport and community involvement. She participates in boxing, which has taught her discipline, resilience, and confidence, and she enjoys swimming during the summer season. She is also actively involved in her church, where she participates in various activities that support her personal and spiritual growth. Looking ahead, she hopes to continue excelling academically, participate in future Olympiads and competitions, and develop into a well-rounded young leader who can make a positive impact in society.

Her message to children and parents
To children: Dream big, work hard, and never underestimate what you can achieve through dedication and perseverance. Every accomplishment starts with a willingness to learn and the courage to keep going when things become difficult.

To parents: Your support, encouragement, and presence matter more than you realise. Children thrive when they know they are loved, supported, and believed in. Success is rarely achieved alone; it is often the result of a strong family, committed educators, and a community that helps a child grow.

India is fortunate to be surrounded by strong role models. She comes from a close-knit family where education is highly valued, and where her mother and aunts all hold tertiary qualifications, including postgraduate degrees. She has grown up understanding that achievement requires dedication, sacrifice, and a lifelong commitment to learning.
